Hi! I came across this video and th0ught it was good. Please, watch it and react to it. Also, answer the question that appears at the end of the video.
Deadline: August 31
Hi class!Time to use this blog again!Let´s this discuss a little bit about this video. In my opinion, beauty is something relative so I´m not so sure if it can be achieved in the perfect way.As models want to appear very beautifully and eye-catching in magazines, this kind of technology known as photoshop is used.Although people who see these models may believe that the way they look may be perfect, another very different thing is when people see them face to face, and that is the real image it is important to consider.I belive that the main purpose of the photoshop technique is to make models look younger, thinner and of course, there are economic reasons behind all this. Considering the last question the woman asks, to feel out of control in this kind of context means mainly two things that are kind of prohibited in the twenty first century, which are ageing and gaining kilos. That is the reason why this helpful technology known as photoshop is used. Thus, models can feel under control again. That´s all for today!I hope to read all your comments and I wish you a great looong weekend!!
Hi people. Well, what a topic! It’s an interesting video and I think all of us have sometime seen the “before and after” of famous people with Photoshop. In my opinion this is one of those wrong uses people give to technology. Even though Photoshop is used in magazines for an esthetical purpose, it goes against reality. What’s more, those programs are so used nowadays that you can easily download them from the internet to edit your pictures so that you look more beautiful or younger, etc. I agree with Alexis, the nutritionist, who says that despite the reader knows that photos are retouched; he doesn’t know to which extent they are retouched. But what it’s true is that it affects the reader in some way. In my opinion it is deceitful, especially about what is related to health care, because if it is promoting sports or diets or whatever it is, the results will not be the same as the picture in the magazine. Besides many people are likely to misunderstand the image and the message it gives. Some serious health problems can arise, for example bulimia and anorexia or low self-esteem and frustration because it is impossible to have a body or face like people in magazines. People in the Media should reinforce the idea of accepting yourself in the way you are and not promoting this fake perfection through Photoshop.
Hello everybody! How are you? Well, what a topic!!!! This video reminds me of Susana Gimenez´s photo, the one in which she appeared without belly button in her body as a result of Photoshop. Do you remember it? Nowadays, everybody knows that photos can be retouched using this technique. However, I think that some people go on thinking that stars and famous people are physically perfect. The media is the responsible for making us believe on that false idea. I totally agree with Vero when she says that in this case technology is wrong used. From my point of view, it is important for everybody to know that, physically, we are all the same. That is to say, the a lot of people have bags and “extra” weight, Hollywood ´s stars too!!!!! Considering the idea of “feeling out of control”, not only does it happen to young girls who want to look prettier and thinner, but it also occurs to older women who desire to look like a girl of 18. Very nice and interesting topic!!! See you soon… Luci
FROM MILENA: Hi everybody! Well, the video is really interesting. I think that Photoshop is very much used among celebrities when they are taken photographs for a magazine. I believe that they have a reason for wanting their photographs retouched; they want to look perfect and young all the time. I consider that this is very negative, because it seems that they don’t want to accept that they get older as everybody does, and this also has to do with lack of maturity. In addition, they give teenagers a wrong image of what beauty is, and that if you want to be always perfect and beautiful, you should have a perfect skin, body and hair. From my point of view, having a perfect body and face has nothing to do with beauty; what I mean is that these things refer to a trivial concept of beauty.
Considering the question that appears at the end of the video, I believe that trying to achieve the impossible is not something that an intelligent person would do. You always have to try to achieve aims that you know that aren’t going to make you feel out of control, otherwise, you would feel depressed and with low self-esteem. I think that the important thing is that you have to accept yourself the way you are without following any kind of role model imposed by society.
great comments guys! I think we all agree on the fact that making people believe you can achieve perfection is causing many health and psycological problems. by the way, what is beauty to you? what's your concept of it?
FROM NOELIA MARENGO Hi everybody! Well, it's a very interesting video. In my opinion, this technique is not good for people for many reasons. On the one hand, young girls who look at those unreal photographs try to be like those models and they put in risk their health and in the other hand this changes people's mind completely and not in a good way. This tendency makes women only care about their physical apearence. From my prespective, that's not what really matters. For example, you may see a perfect model in magazine but perhaps you have the chance to meet her personally and you realize she is not a "nice" person at all. Furthermore, when we will be 90 there would be characteristics of our face that would be difficcult to modify, but our personality would be the same than when we were 30. The real problem is to change that belief, it's very hard nowadays to convience some teenagers not to care so much about your physical appearance. Of course, you can do exercise to be fit, but in order to feel happy with yourself, not to like everybody else. I believe there is not a fixed concept of beuaty. We all pay attention to different things when we want to justify why a person likes us. Well... That's my point of view.. See you in class!
Waaaw! What a topic! I do believe that the concept of perfection is over estimated. But I also think that the idea of perfection is relative, it is not the same for everybody. However, that is something that our society is not taking into account and we are bombarded constantly but the media that is imposing us one unique idea of perfection. I don’t consider “Photoshop” the real problem. From my point of view, the problem is what models represent. I mean, what is a model? A model is somebody who shows us what we are supposed to be, how we are supposed to behave. Nowadays models are only images. Ideal images difficult to imitate. Instead of showing us how important is to develop our inner strength, follow dreams and deal with real problems, they only show us the importance of being well dressed, having a thin body and a “Barbie” face. The media doesn’t invite us to be smart and to care about other people. The media presents empty images and Photoshop is the tool it uses to build up those images. And when we look at ourselves at the mirror and we see we are not as those images, we feel out of place and we’d do anything just to fit in. The real danger is that we, as grown up people, know about how real things are. But kids and teenagers are born with this false idea of “perfection” and they don’t know the truth. Anyway, not only teenagers are influenced by that idea, but also adult women are so worried and concerned about their physical image that they expose themselves to danger surgeries in order to look younger and more beautiful. Concerning your last question about what “Beauty” is, well… that’s a difficult question for me because it represents an internal problem I have hahahah. The thing is, I’m not worried about how boys look physically. But I do care about their brains :O What I’m trying to say is that a beautiful person would be somebody who is extremely intelligent and knows how to use that intelligence to help other people. In other words, I like “nerds” or “brainies”. But I don’t those arrogant “nerds” who consider themselves better than the rest of the people. I like the sweet nerds hahahhaha. It sounds awful because it seems that I discriminate people who are gifted with other skills and abilities. But I’m speaking the truth! Sometime ago, I tried to date a boy but I gave up with him when I found out that he spells “Vaño” instead of “Baño”. That shouldn’t be a problem because spelling mistakes can be corrected (tell me! Hahaha). The real problem was that when I called his attention about it he told me: “Did you understand what I was trying to say? So, it’s Ok!”. Horrible attitude! As a conclusion, I like clever boys. And I wouldn’t mind if they are not that intelligent but try to go over those difficulties. Ah! And I like boys who wears glasses hahahahaha. That’s all!
Hi everybody!! What an interesting topic to discuss! I really liked the video. I agree with Vero, when she said that Photoshop goes against reality. Nowadays a lot of famous people are interested in having a perfect body and a beautiful face, and when trying to do that, they tend to forget that it is not their real figure. I really believe that people who have Photoshop done on their photos are not sure about themselves and that is why they don’t accept their body as it really is. What is worst, people who are that obsessed with their bodies, tend to have serious problems with food. They don’t eat because they will increase their weight and that can have serious consequences, such as anorexia or bulimia. It is true that television nowadays is not helping much because they show perfect and beautiful people. On the other hand, models are chosen because of their figure and if they don’t have the perfect weight they are not hired.
Taking into account the last question, I don’t think that retouching should be banned but there should be a limit imposed to those who do that. Setting limits would be good to make people aware of the consequences they may have to face if they make excesses.
From my point of view, beauty is a relative concept as I explained before.Despite the fact that many people are looking for "perfection", it can not be achieved. What we can do is to value ourselves just as we are and not to think of becoming like those models taht appear on T.V.If people did that,I take it our self image and self esteem would increase a lot. Being a man,not only do I pay attention to the general appearence of girls but also to their way of being, their personalities and their intelligence and that´s very important for me. Of couse there are girls more beautiful than others but if they want a man only for the car he drives or the job he has or the money he earns, there is no point in knowing them at all.A man must be supportive, caring, matture, intelligent and nice and at the same time women must value that. Bye!Have a really nice weekend!
Cristian, Florencia, Alejandra and Noelia: thanks for your interesting comments! It seems we all agree on many points. Beauty and perfection are such controvertial issues! I'm glad we have the chance to talk about them.
